Mail Art Archives

Some Mail-Artists have been doing Mail-Art for a longer time and have saved all they get in, documented what they sent out, collected books, magazines and documentations, and before they knew it were the owner of a Mail Art Archive. Tell us more...

Do you have a mail-art archive?

If you have a mail-art archive.please tell a bit about what is in it, how you store it, from which dates the materials are, and if possible show a photo.Continue

Hello to all the members of the group. Since 2008 I have organized "Being there without being there" initially alone and since 2010, third edition, with a splendid post by the Venezuelan artist. I have archived all the postal works that have arrived in recent years. Initially the postal art exhibition from 2008 to 2015 was in Pontedera (Pisa) as a side event of the meetings of contemporary artists at Carrozzeria Rizieri, an anomalous and alternative place for an artistic event. Since 2016 the headquarters has become the Officina Dada Boom of Viareggio (Lucca), also this alternative place, free from any compromise and non-institutional. Because I and _guroga think that the true postal art must be free and independent.
To start the collaboration in this public group all the posters of the eleven past editions.
ps) I'm using the Glooge translator ...

I found a couple of "PELIGRO!" zines which were created in 1982 or 1983. These were available at various alternative spaces (one of which was an alternative gallery I ran) in Austin, Texas. These are currently stored in an archive box and because I saw this group, they are now digitized. These have a heavy Latin American influence. One of the artists I remember (things were a bit foggy in those days) was Bill Daniel who is a talented photographer and film maker among other things. You can look him up on Wikipedia. I've included a couple of the more interesting pages which contain real cat hair and blood. Sounds gruesome, but it works. Here a few images from the zines:

BTW - John Dowd is a mail art cult figure. There was a show of his work at Printed Matter in NYC April May 2017. That got some coverage here at IUOMA.

Well, Facebook censored my link to the John Dowd show because there was a pic of his bare butt. Can you believe?

Hi Karl, thanks. I came across this issue of "So & So" by chance in a box of stuff I had. (You know how that is.) I have no memory of it or how I got it, but - yeah - it's a great collection and ahead of its time when you consider it was published in 1980.

Of course, it's getting interest on Facebook. But nobody remembers John Marron. I'm sure he is connected to the L=A=N=Gpoets. I think So & So was considered a LANGPO organ. But no one can confirm or deny.

Anyway, yeah, I wanted to share. It's a great piece of history. Unfortunately, you're not in this one Carl! How rare.
