FOREWORD

When we go to press with a new publication, we cannot help breathing a sigh of relief, accompanied by a question we always ask ourselves: is it still worth doing such a type of job, and so challenging? Actually, the answer is always positive, but accompanied by the statement that this book is the latest in our series. We arrived at a time when it would be better not even think about it anymore. In any case we always go on, for one reason or another. Of course these reasons are still valid and interesting. This year we are going to create an event during an extraordinary stellar conjunction which takes place every ten years. In fact this year the following events take place simultaneously at Celestial DiWine: the Biennale of Venice, the quinquennial Documenta in Kassel, the decennial Sculpture Project in Münster. We realise a parallel event and a book, which are not mere opportunities to highlight the international events that since quite a long time put in motion the engine of European culture driven by artists working around the world. The Embassy of Venice always responds positively and cannot help celebrating even this infrequent but important anniversary.

FOREWORD

When the Director of the Museo Minimo asked me to invite some artists friends of mine to remake one of their Neapolitan playing card in order to get a bunch of Artist Cards, I immediately accepted knowing the professionalism of the Museo Minimo. I also accepted enthusiastically to organize a new event because I know that I can rely on a number of Italian and international artists of proven ability. Yet this time I was a little perplexed about the subject. But when I started to invite artists, I received not only immediate and positive feedbacks, but also such an amount of approvals that I realized that we had begun to follow an interesting route. All the invited artists immediately signed, only a Dutch artist, after an initial acceptance, gave up the challenge because, after the usual and repeated clarification emails, she felt inadequate: apologizing, she quitted. The invited artists, coming from 12 different countries, have acted professionally on the assigned card. Only one wanted to be transgressively King by force. The exhibition had a huge success in Italy and abroad and even the press did its duty of information. I found out that there are also collectors of unusual or revised playing cards, they communicated their enthusiasm even from beyond the Alps. As a result of all of this it came the idea of documenting the operation with a publication that witnesses what really happens in a period when the virtual creates easy illusions.

COLLEZIONE LEONE ROSSO 2

COLLISIONS

The Eighties were the years when the artists currently operating in a vision of globalization of living and conceiving the work of art have been formed. A work that often can leave us amazed to consider its values. But the world is renewed quickly and often a decade can be considered at the space-time level like a century. It is easy to understand how this is done not only at a formal level and in the use of materials but above all on the idea of the art itself. The artist tends to be less and less faber and more and more sapiens tending to a synthesis that never before anyone had been able to imagine. Moreover he would like to be the ideologue and critic of himself in a form of freedom that the traditional market tends to obliterate and will hardly be able to recognize. But the road taken does not admit recesses but a whole sequence of collisions that constitute the new stimuli often as a result of the clashes that may even lead not to the realization of the work but to a continuous design of the same, often multiple, which serves to keep alive an idea of art that others will have to share not simulating the works themselves but considering them as ever new moments of research.                             Giancarlo Da Lio

COLLEZIONE LEONE ROSSO

ARCHETYPES

Venice used to be as lively as Paris but today it would be totally unfair to see only the negative aspects of a city that is struggling to renew itself, adapting to the contemporary, or rather to the future, reality. A future that few have been able to see, because most of people are addicted to a melancholic depression that leads them to a chronic immobilization. In this swamp created and built by a chain of mediocre people, some glimmer of light can be detected that help us to still believe in the ancient and contemporary stones. Where the sign is seen as a positive witness of ancient and future nobility. And now, in this situation, new not sporadic but ongoing attempts appear, that deal with both the dreams created and suggested by a shallow market and the depreciation of the fundamental values. It is in this way that some issues were able to highlight and denounce the steps of a path that leads nowhere. Since many years Tiziana Baracchi has denounced this situation, and then the neologism plastocollage was created. Which is not just a strategy to attract an increasingly tired and indifferent attention. Indifference supported by a now permanent laziness. The neologism plastocollage now has a history that has evolved over time but always keeping the same characteristic of research and lively curiosity. The handiworks originally were subjected to lamination to better preserve and highlight their contents. Today the neologism has evolved and it points out the use of experimental materials. But it also plays with the multiple meanings of plastic in order to make us think about a world where even a simple blade of grass could be replaced by a carpet in the name of conformity.            Giancarlo Da Lio
