When the IUOMA was 20 years, the members managed to send in enough texts for a complete book. With the 25 year celebration, that wasn't that succesful. Too little materials.

Maybe a retry for 2018? Are there some authors amongst you who care to write about the state of the Mail-Art network in the new century

Already 11 articles are submitted and there is room for more.

So the book will be published, with or without you.

I aim at a book of 150-256 pages. Each author will have his short biography included. Deadline for submissions is September 2017, In October the book will be launched.

Some people ask about subjects to write on. Suggestions that are open:

1. Mail-Art in the age of Internet.

2. Is digital work also Mail-Art?

3. History of Mail-Art for someone who enters the network in this decade.

4. Mail-Art catalogues or websites?

5. Male dominance in the Mail-Art network?

6. Postal Tactical Gear: Enduring Political Storm

7. Mail Art Culinary Tips and Beauty Care

8. Non PC Postcards to Share with Friends and Family

9. Adventures of Sharpie: The Story Continues

10. Attention Grabbing Mail

11. Mail-Art on Wikipedia. Is the right story told?

12. What will happen to the Mail-Art Archives that mail-artists have built?

13. How to create a Mail-Art exhibition.

14. Will the new children ever exchange their tablet and smartphone for a postage stamp?

15. Is Mail-Art dead?

16. Mail-Artists working places. Overview based on the group online.

17. Choose your own special topic and/or subject.

I'm not very active in the mailart world anymore, but about 10-11 years ago, it saved my sanity. I'd be happy to write a personal essay about my experiences. I am a published writer and have had essays printed in Chicken Soup for the Soul anthologies, Hip Mama magazine, as well as other local and/or less well known publications.

I will follow this thread to stay informed.

An article about your personal experiences would be welcome.

I actually have a (nice?) idea: an interview with/archive exploration of Vittore Baroni about the commingling of noise music and mail art... but I have to ask to Vittore!

Ask him. He wrote an essay for the first book published by IUOMA, so he might be interested in this for sure.

Since the intended celebration is nearly a year away, you might consider the idea of having interested members submit a uniformly-sized image, ( 4" x 6" or 6" x 6"), as their proposal for a postage stamp saluting Mail Art.

And since IUOMA is under your directorship, you should select less than four  entries that you consider finalists, and mail them to the USPS, who just might print such a stamp. I would also contact the USPS in the next few months, and see if they are receptive to the idea. If they are, you might make the winning entry the first page of your intended book. Just sayin'.

James L. Weaver

In most countries you can already design your own postage. It is an interesting idea though, but since I live in the Netherlands, doing something like that in USA might be difficult. Will give it some thoughts.

When reading James' message, I thought we could have a try to ask Dutch PostNL if they will issue an official stamp on IUOMA. They issued Postcrossing stamps so why not IUOMA anniversary stamps?! Maybe because the amount of Postcrossers in the Netherlands is much higher than mail artists, but as IUOMA has been founded in NL at least we could have a try.

And a good idea that James will contact USPS. Looking forward to knowing what they will think about it.

I would be interested in contributing to such a text. Specifically, I'd want to focus mail art interactions with strangers (I've been mailing individually designed cards to strangers since 2010). I'd also be interested in exploring a piece about the relationship between slow and fast design (e.g. mail versus internet), and what can be gained by slowing down (or speeding up).

sounds like an interesting article.

Thanks for all your suggestions. Will react to them when I have a bit more time. Lots of goot suggestions I will consider. For texts, just e-mail proposals to info [at] iuoma.org with subject 'book for IUOMA 2018"

Just made a working file for the book with possible subjects and possible authors. Will start to make an overview of the important guidelines for each author so they know what is expected.  Also will need a short biography of each author, and when I get propositions of subjects that are similar I will come with suggestions.

The book will need a good cover, and will get an ISBN number. Probably there won't be the funds for a free hardcopy for authors, but the PDF-version will be available for sure. The selling of the hardcopy version of the book will be going through LuLu self-publishing.

The subjects in the book will get the right order and when a specific theme is missing I might look for a specific author that can and would like to write that article.

More soon. Will make a kind of newsletter for the authors when things have progressed.

30 years is really something Ruud, I'd be glad to contribute a text, maybe about the state of the Mail Art Network today and the problems concening its "historicization" as a proper art movement. Sign me in and remind me if I forget to send something... Merry Xmas & Happy New Mail Art! Vittore
