The Philpott Lake Project

Information

The Philpott Lake Project

I came across almost 50 unused postcards of an unfortunate looking lake in Virginia at a junk shop yesterday and I think they have potential.

I was hoping that I could send them out to any interested artist, they could alter them as they see fit, send them back to me, and I could publish the responses in any format the group would like.  Maybe I could scan them and create a Tumblr page?

No restrictions on the medium or content, first 47 responses, and I will publish as we go.

I am open to any and all suggestions.

I am also a new member, so please correct and forgive me if I don't understand quite how things work yet.  Participants will be sent a piece of art from me as well.

Juana--your inventive story and illustration for Philpott Lake is so unique! I'm amazed at all the imaginative additions to the cards.

My Philpott Lake postcard is ready to send Monday! I like that you are taking a pilgrimage to the site and I think a show of the cards would be fantastic! Great idea :)

A Philpott Lake altered postcard exhibit at Philpott Lake sounds amazing! Hopefully if you do this, you can get some photos and/or visitor reactions.

The process that I used to alter the original postcard was similar to Juana's. I lightly sandpapered the top layer of the card and then painted over it with diluted acrylic inks using a cosmetic sponge. The columns and figure are collaged onto the card using PVA glue.

Would be great to have an exhibit at Philpott Lake. BTW: this is such a fun project and the altered cards are all so original! It really inspires me, too.

Juana, thank you for the details, what a wonderful and intriguing process.

I am getting ready for a trip to Philpott and there is a visitor center, would anyone be opposed to me pitching a display of your artwork if I blocked out the first line of your address?

And Carmela, is it is same technique?  This project has been really inspiring for me from both a creative and technical standpoint.

I am finally all up to date on the blog! http://philpottlakeproject.tumblr.com/

I also found a world map and I am pinning your locations, interesting that a few of you are close together.  Thanks again everyone, I am really enjoying the project.

Of course, I will send you a msg Wednesday letting you know if it came in the mail. :)

Thanks, Erin.  That sounds like an excellent plan.  I don't expect that we will have 10+ people signing up in the next week, but that being said, I will make sure to save one for you.  Please just let me know if it shows.
