I stumbled across this great envelope published on the website of the State Library and Archives of Florida. Circa 1972.

I vote with E Elkan, just because crocogator sounds so awful.

This is such a good find, E.J.

From the overhead view, the crocodile has a pointy nose, the alligator a rounded one. The way we remember it at our house is that Alligator starts with a pointy letter and has rounded nose, and Crocodile has a rounded first letter and a pointy nose. But they all bite and are not friends to people.

Bill Haley and the Comets, circa 1955:

"See you later alligator
After 'while crocodile
See you later alligator
So long, that's all, goodbye"

Some sort of Crocodile/Alligator hybrid?  A Crocogator perhaps?

Perhaps it's a crocodile? Do they have rounded noses (snouts)?

E.J., This is so cool. Alligator with a roundy nose?

Yay! Someone else ready to confess that there were mailartists long before Ray Johnson. Even in the U.S.

Very nice!

I have come across hand-draw British envelopes from as early as 1860.

And our American friends think that Ray Johnson invented Mail Art almost a century later? No way!
