Tape Transfer Trashpo by meeah williams (Brooklyn, New York, USA) - with Diane Keys collab

meeah - 10.30.2014 - 1

Mail-art by IUOMA member meeah williams (collab with Diane Keys) (Brooklyn, New York, USA)

October 30, 2014 - I can only assume this wonderful, large postcard-size work comes from my Brooklyn correspondent, meeah williams. The determination was not simple. I cannot find any sort of signature. More important, the front (above) manages to mimic the Trashpo style of Diane Keys (Illinois, USA) so perfectly that I consider the work an homage to Trashpo. While the scan does not reveal it well, this is a tape transfer piece; that is how so many of the wonderful effects are achieved. Thus, the work invokes tape transfer master Jon Foster (North Carolina, USA). meeah williams is remarkably versatile and constantly experimenting. This is a perfect example.

Pondering the address side led me to conclude that only meeah williams could have made this. First, I believe I recognize the handwriting. Second, the layered asemics reflect meeah’s very recognizable style. They are worth clicking into for a closer look at the detail.

So many thanks to meeah williams for more wonderful mail. If meeah did not send this, please correct me!

does KDJ have an official statement? im trying to track down pics of the pieces I slaughtered

Well, my stand against the destruction of the early Trashpo pieces has made me very unpopular. DKULTNY will issue a statement.

meeah is a wonderful person who usually makes great art. I am perplexed now to learn that I was mailed shredded work by DK without explanation. It's not my day with Jesus Jim urging tomatoes & eggs be thrown at me as a performance piece.

I take it to heart and actually am touched that you think they are worth preserving. I understand what you are saying. i'm sure there are pics of them somewhere buried in threads.I agree about Meeah's diverse and often confusing dichotomy of styles. her envelope artwork is  as you said -edgy, ironic, bold and what she usually sends inside is much softer and more abstract. She is a complex person and also a lover of layers like me.

Thanks DK, and I want anyone reading this - especially Kulters & trashpoets - to know this is not an argument or disharmony. I know people get upset about that. DKULTNY isn't "going to the mattresses."

You, of course, have freedom to do whatever you want with your work. When it comes to historical, foundational Trashpo pieces, however, I'm just asking you to proceed with some thought about the future. Maybe some Kulters have a point of view about this. Jesus Jim's foundational pieces are at least documented online.

I have always considered meeah a great mail-art friend. Now that I realize she sent me chopped up DK classics, I'm feeling slightly nauseous - as if someone mailed me an authentic, cut-up Picasso. Maybe the cut-up is outstanding. I would still be upset that someone destroyed a Picasso. It feels like someone mailed me a fish wrapped in newspaper.

meeah is, de facto, a member of DKULTNY. I don't know about a censure or if she should receive a TrashPo Litzer. I guess she is a member of DKULTJER (New Jersey) as well.

Anyway, I am sure we can resolve the D-Kut-ups.

i'm really surprised Meeah didn't stitch these pieces as she usually does

I will put down the box cutter...It just looked like a lot of outmoded trash to me. it is amazing that you recognized it right away. the found sheet that says meat cutter is about 5 years old. it's kind of a tape transfer as the signange was put up in packing tape.  I have sent the pieces out naked and clothed over the past few weeks.  Their significance is the I collected everything over a year and then put them together for the first ever Trashpo exhibit in Elgin (followed by the first trashpo mail art exhibit) there was  trashpo installation at that show that went right back in the garbage. didn't have anywhere to keep it all.  the rest of the pieces will remain in the Elgin Vault.

Wow! Thanks for the info DK. So the top piece is actually a DK/meeah collab. I'm glad we have finally gotten to the bottom of this. What also astounds me is that I recognized your work when someone else sent it to me unidentified.

As for the other: I and the possibly as many as 10,000 members of DKULTNY do here lodge an official protest against your dismantling & re-purposing of some of your earlier Trashpo work. This is vital historical material that belongs to all DKulters everywhere.

I can't believe you are destroying these works. I hope you will cease & desist from this until some sort of resolution can be worked out among the DKult chapters.

Our dreams & plans to make the Elgin Mansion "The New Graceland" is going to be seriously hampered if you destroy your early work, which would obviously be the centerpiece of the permanent collection (& assuming Jim & JMB would donate their work).

this is awesome! I've been unofficially collaborating with Meeah for quite some time and the lines have become blurry as to who sent what when and who did what when. I find myself getting confused and it's a fun process. I'm sure the top piece definately IS a reworked/collabed piece I sent her. To your horror DVS, I DID dismantle some early trashpo works and this was one of my favorite bits of trash. I ripped it off a pole. It was layers after layer years of posters--a pretty rare find. Love what she has done here. it definately is Meeah's work interesting this ended up  at DKULT NY ripped from the streets of Elgin near the site of the historic Elgin Watch Factory

This is not a a very good scan. The asemic side is my favorite part, Susan. meeah is great at creating the asemic symbols (I keep thinking that's a contradiction in terms) and her layering is FAB. This one in particular has great overlays.

meeah is so funny - she sends me all these avant, often edgy things. Elsewhere, I see work she has done that's flowers & birds & just the opposite of how I think of her. I guess she's very versatile.

That's a strong confirmation, BG. I've been a little nervous about attributing this to meeah because the front is a dead ringer for DK Trashpo. You'd have to see it to appreciate it. But as you know, Diane's handwriting is so wobbly she could never do the address on the reverse side. I'm sure it's meeah.

Now if meeah intended to do a homage to DK and Jon Foster - I'd like to know that.
