Even though it makes sense that we can look on each others profiles, you may want to add your address here and any blogs or other accounts you want highlighted. This way it's in a closed environment and we all get to share.

Because my friend Matt asked me this the other night, I had to think about it. His is painting a blue sky and some clouds, then he waits to see if anything more comes. His skull for Skull Appreciation Day was just the blue sky & clouds cause…Continue

Who will you send  your first piece of mail to? I've been thinking about this a lot. Will it be someone in this group? Will it be one of the many mail artists I've exchanged MA with over the years? Will it be one of my letter writing friends, or my…Continue

Significant dates for the diary (some might say...) 41 Replies

McFloozy mentioned Quack Day in February and I had a message from Valentine Mark Hermann telling me of an anniversary in February. I figured that it would be best to put all the dates in one discussion, so anyone could contribute and we could all…Continue

Hi, I'm a beginner member and I'm going to start 365 pieces a day on January 1st.  Leading up to this I'm going to start making envelopes to work with and sketching ideas.
I'm really bad at following discussion boards on here so if you are starting this January too can you add me as a friend?  Thanks everyone :)

Awesome. Bring it on! I was thinking, perhaps that with 2014 arriving, it may make sense to start on new years day? Up to you of course, but it's always good to have the moral support of new starters.

Mail Art makes me happy......that's why I do it. It's really that simple.

Hey everyone - I was a mailart beginner when I signed up for the 365 project
and it was doing something every day that was the key for me - even if I only had a few minutes to make it. The community on 365 kept me going and I loved making and receiving comments on the way. I don't plan ahead much but do often work in sets of five - a theme within a theme which makes the decision about what to do a but easier. I've just made it into triple figures on my bird-a-day 365 project - and I've also received some smashing bird mailart which keeps giving me new ideas. So, everyone can do it their own way but be bold and surprise yourself!

Mim is right, for me working on the 365 project got me in the "habit" of creating mail-art. A little piece of creativity everyday or almost everyday. The first 365 project took me over a year to complete. The second year 365.2 started out great but I fell out of the habit of working on mail-art, I need to reboot. I miss sending and receiving these little pieces of art. I love the creativity of the other mail art artist and have been inspired to try new techniques. Over all the 365 project has been a great experience for me and connected me with a wonderful group people.

Love your process, Angie! Makes me smile, watching you in my mind - for me, one episode of Breaking Bad, and I have a bunch of bits cut out, plus it eases the tension of the show.

Oh you spotted that, Kristine. Yes, I taught in an Art Foundation program in a University for a long time; more recently classes for adults at our museum studio school. I, also, do workshops on Mail Art. I'm glad that I can share my experiences. Me, too, my own Mail Art piece inspired me to make my own cards this year.

For anyone attempting a 365 project, I offer my experience. My method for doing one a day - spend time cutting up scraps for collage, have them on my work table, have all other supplies, rubber stamps, ink, adhesive, rub on letters, water color pencils, etc on hand. I'll cut a bunch of blanks from cereal boxes, etc.at one time. Everything is there and ready. Daily - don't think, don't plan, just do something, Give up expectations of perfection, of making ART, just make something. Keep it simple. 15 minutes. That's it. As my son taught me, after his 365 project - making something daily is about a practice. Giving up perfection. And simplifying. I hope this helps, gives some encouragement. You can set your own goal - make something once a week goal, or once a month goal, or whatever your goal - just do it. Stop, re-start, stop, re-start. Eventually, it becomes a habit, a practice, and then you just do it. Just make something. Best of wishes to all of you, good luck with whatever you choose, and be pleased with your efforts, whatever you accomplish. There are no rules, just a creative practice. As I come to the end of my 3rd and LAST year long daily project, I wish you all well. 15 more days to go! Woo Hoo!

Hi Rose

I don't mean to put newbies off totally, but think that mailart should be something that the creators really enjoy making. The 365 is a great project and in some cases it's just what is needed. I've known some people to be put off mailart as a result of setting the bar so high though, and I've always felt quite bad about that.

As for what "rules" there may be - there aren't really any. I will always say that there are no mailart police and that a 365 is your own personal challenge. If you want to skip a few days there is nobody to say you can't. I personally took 3 years to make 365 pieces, others have made 1001, some upload a piece every few weeks. It's entirely up to you.

I guess that the aim is 365 pieces, if possible in 365 days. How you go about it is up to you, and the group will encourage  you where it can.

It's a tough challenge make no mistake, but it's a hugely rewarding one!
