The world she depicts, lived, was nothing like my African spell, really, but I loved reading her account. And then again, earlier in the year I met up with someone who had grown up in Kenya with English parents and she was completely dismissive of her books. I loved Kuki Galman's book,'I dreamed of Africa' probably because where she lived wasn't too far from was and I had tons and tons of snakes - in my house, in my pit latrine, in the garden (I shiver to even type it). That same English Kenyan knows Kuki and wouldn't think of reading anything she wrote...
