Asemic Art by Sabela Bana (A Coruna, Spain)

Mail art by IUOMA member Sabela Bana (A Coruna, Spain)

May 21, 2017 - Spanish artist Sabela Bana is a member of the asemic writing group at the IUOMA. She mailed me these wonderful pieces. Some choose to call asemic writing asemic art, and in these works by Sabela Bana you definitely see the connection to abstract art. The element of calligraphy is also pronounced and the unconscious forms that emerge in automatic writing.

Many thanks to Sabela Bana.

Hi Gin, one of the things I like most about these pieces (and your response) is that they show that anyone can do asemic writing and express something to someone else. Children write asemically before they learn to write conventionally. It is wired into all of us.

And despite the fact that asemics can't be "read" in a conventional way, they are often very expressive. I think Sabela's work here is deeply expressive.

With asemics, though, I think the viewer's role in interpretation is very important, much more important than when you're "reading" a conventional text. So your reactions are great!

You make sharing these worthwhile!
