<p>I think this is due to Progress, that is, about the sorting machines replacing the human brain. In the good old times I have sent and received amazingly trashed envelopes, covered with all sort of marks, stamps etc. I had exchages with other mail artists reusing the same envelope over and over. Sot of a postal tennis match.</p>

Utilizing abandoned & trashed perfectly usable envelopes seems very practical to me. (Yes, I can certainly understand that permit numbers, business addresses, codes, etc. should not be left to confuse then postal machines & postal personnel ) but otherwise I don't see the problem…</p>
