Victorian DaDa

Information

Victorian DaDa

DeVillo Sloan inspired me to start this group, and I'd like help defining it, and would love to see other examples besides my own.

This group is dedicated to mail art, perhaps with a time period theme (Pre-Raphaelite, Flapper, Byzantine, Edwardian, even modern day) of an elegant nature spiked with a Dada / Surreal twist.

Elements can be added as creatively as the artist would like.... Or taken out. Nature is prevalent due to the Romantic floral effect and poetry (often cut & paste) is incorporated. An arm or leg can be truncated and repositioned. Woo Hoo!

Or anything you feel like.

Thank you, and hope to see you here!

Xx.

OK. Now, I am probably over thinking this ( as I usually do) but for me it is part of the fun. ..I've done a bit more reading and thinking and I think I understand the theme better. Brilliant,jewel-like colours - no dingy, grungy corners; even lighting - no ominous shadows;as much detail given to the main subject as to the elements in the back/foreground- no fuzzy shading;use of symbols to convey a message - including elements from nature; an abundance of luxurious detail. Traditional subject - young red/long haired european women. And the Gin element : that Dada/surreal twist. I think I am  going to work on the idea of imitating the pre Raphaelite style with non european subjects (African/Asian elegance)...

I wish I had taken this photo: ( its by Alice Mertens) - Its elegant - and has surreal elements - Would you say it fits the theme??

Its going to be fun....

Phew! This will be challenging for me. But I love whats been posted so far and I will get to work... I've been collecting old embroidery patterns forever - so I think thats where I'll get my nature/floral elements...and I might try some articulated limbs... mmm. but the best part will be to incorporate that surreal, acid twist! My thoughts are a whizzing and whirling... happy days!

I received this piece from Moan Lisa (Iowa, USA) that I would consider Victorian DaDa. I think its really interesting that Moan, who is pretty much informed and driven by DaDa and Fluxus, has produced quite a few pieces like this.

Marie Antoinette precedes the Victorian, but I thought this piece by Janine Weiss (Switzerland) captures the V-DaDa concept.
