Redwork Post

First of all, I want to say thank you to everyone who participated in The Philpott Lake Project and The Mail Art Experiment.  I can’t thank you enough for the generosity with which you shared your art and the patience you had with me throughout the process of putting together a webpage and exhibit for each.

This round, I have a vision of creating a single piece of art incorporating designs from 50-70 mail artists.  Embroidery is something I love, and I would like to make a redwork quilt with a square dedicated to each contributing artist.  Here is an excellent example of the type of quilt I hope to create:

https://milwaukeehistory.net/unlocking-the-vault/redwork-quilt-text/

Since it will be just one piece, I plan on showing it in a group textile exhibit when it is finished.  The stitching will be incredibly time consuming, so I am setting a goal of having the quilt completed in the fall of 2020.  When it is done, I will send a print of the finished piece to each contributor.  As designs are received and pieces are stitched, I will post updates at redworkpost.tumblr.com

If you would like to participate, please send a design that fits within a 7x7 inch square (I expect it will have a ½ inch to one-inch border).  Ideally, I would like you to incorporate your name and city into your square, but other than that the subject matter is entirely up to you.

Technically I would like simple line art (no shading or blocks of color) and you should be able to trace over your design with a fat marker without it getting muddled.

Thank you, I hope you consider joining in on the madness!

As others have said, this is indeed a very ambitious project! Your poor fingers! :-) You certainly have a flair for creating amazing and unusual projects. It's a pleasure being able to participate. I will work on getting a design to you soon.

I shall be sending you a design soon,Diane. Your projects are always so creative and inspiring, and you will have lots of work, so  with wishes for a most successful result! 7in x 7in is about 18cm x18cm with 1-2cm border, I think? All the best!

This is an awesome project - what a terrific idea. I am putting something in the post tomorrow - please let me know if a simpler design would be better for the embroidery and I'll happily send another version.

Good luck!

What a wonderful idea! The historical example is a very inspiring guide. I love how many natural elements are included, the little bits of flora and fauna. I've been trying to learn more about the native plant species in my area recently so I think I will include a simplified design of one of those. Looking forward to contributing and to the final piece. I highly admire your commitment to your art, Diana!

08.08.18 Dare Ms.Diana Hale, ...You seem to very easily come up with the best &  the most provocative Mail Art projects.  I like this idea a lot & already wish I  had some kind of mail art quilt (but alas, I have no real "artistical" of practical skills). I do hope you will consider incorporating the classic Ray Johnson Bunny;---should you need me to submit that particular motif  I would be pleased to do so..although, I am also vain enough to want to include my own little cartoonish self-poor-trait. All best wishes for your "Redwork" Project. SinCelery, Richard Canard
