the russian olive is essentially what we call a "trash tree," an invasive species here in the desert southwest. it grows to a gnarly, thorny 20 feet or so tall, bears an inedible fruit about half the size of my smallest fingernail, and sucks the ground dry of water. the birds do like to perch in its branches, so it is good for something!
